Savage Storm volleyball closes out 2011-12 at 7 o’clock tonight when Southwestern Oklahoma State visits Bloomer Sullivan Gym.

Savage Storm football concludes at 2 p.m. Saturday against East Central at Ada.

The Savage Storm basketball ladies open out of conference Friday night with a trip to long-time opponent Oklahoma Christian University. Tip time is 6 p.m.

Southeastern basketball men open the home season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday against Dallas Christian (Texas) in a single game at Bloomer Sullivan Arena.

A frustrating campaign has seen the Storm play really well in spots, just not enough of them. A team with no seniors tends to do that, but it makes the season no less frustrating.

A win over long-time foe Southwestern here Thursday night would be a confidence boost in preparations for 2013 and it would also open the door to a spot in the conference tournament.

The latest Great American Conference standings show Harding (24-6) undefeated at 13-0 in conference play.

Southern Arkansas (21-9) is second at 10-2 in the GAC. Arkansas Tech (23-9) is third at 9-3 and Southwestern (11-18) fourth at 9-4.

East Central (10-20) is fifth at 7-6, Ouachita Baptist (9-16) sixth at 6-7, Arkansas-Monticello (11-21) seventh at 4-8, Southeastern (5-26) eighth at 3-10 and Henderson State (7-21) ninth at 2-10.

Southern Nazarene (11-19) and Northwestern (1-26) are ineligible for regular- or post-season championships due to provisional membership.

Harding has clinched the top seed and the right to host the conference tournament.

The Storm fell 3-0 Tuesday night to Pittsburg (Kansas) State, but played the wheels off the visitors in the second set.

It was a 27-25 loss to the Gorillas, but it did show Southeastern could compete.

Megan Kunkle (5-9 freshman from Garland, Texas, Rowlett High School), turned in a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs while adding a pair of blocked shots.

Taylor Benner (5-7 junior from Soldotna, Alaska, by way of Flower Mound, Texas, High School), had a team-high 13 digs.

Emily Gentle (6-1 sophomore from Van Alstyne, Texas, and Texas-Arlington) had six kills and seven digs.

Madelynne Cera (5-9 sophomore from Clint, Texas, Eastwood High School), led the Storm with 19 assists and also had eight digs.

COACH RAY RICHARDS’ footballers could take out a lot of frustration on a mess of Tigers Saturday at East Central.

The Storm could even the season at 5-5 and leave EC at 5-6 and how could it get sweeter than that?

The latest GAC standings show Henderson State the lone unbeaten team at 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the conference.

Harding (8-1) is second at 6-1, Southern Arkansas (7-2) is third at 5-2 and Ouachita Baptist (6-3) is fourth at 4-3.

Arkansas Tech (5-5) and East Central (5-5) are tied for fifth at 3-4 and Southeastern (4-5) and Southwestern (3-6) are knotted at 2-5.

Arkansas-Monticello (1-9) is ninth at 0-8.

Northwestern Oklahoma (2-7) and Southern Nazarene (1-9) are ineligible for post-season play due to provisional status.

The final regular-season NCAA II Super Region 3 rankings have been released and the top-six teams will make the playoffs.

Henderson State did not play last week and fell to second as Minnesota State-Mankato defeated Sioux Falls to take the top spot.

Harding is ranked fourth and Southern Arkansas entered the poll at No. 10.

NEITHER SOUTHEASTERN nor East Central are ranked in the Super Region 3 football poll.

Fans always come out winners when two certified rivals end a season playing for pride. That’s exactly what we will have Saturday afternoon at Norris Field in Ada.

Forget Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Southeastern and East Central provide the true Bedlam Series stuff in this part of the state.

Records don’t matter. Previous scores don’t matter. Talent doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is inside the lines.

Statistically, SE is sixth in scoring (27.1 points per game) and EC is ninth (22.0). Edge: Southeastern by 5.1 points per game.

Scoring defense has EC fifth (23.7) and Southeastern sixth (28.1). Edge: EC by 4.4 points per game.

Southeastern averages 417.8 ypg in total offense to 287.6 for EC. Edge: SE by 130.2 ypg.

Not much difference in total defense with SE allowing 346.1 and EC giving up 351.7. Edge: Southeastern by 5.6 ypg.

No question this game comes down to the players inside the lines.

Southeastern rushes for 231.8 yards per game and EC run for 138.3 ypg. Edge: Southeastern by 93.5 yards per game.

The Tigers allow 129.4 rushing yards and SE gives up 167.8 ypg. Edge: EC by 38.4 yards per game.

SE passes for 186 yards and EC for 149.3 ypg. Edge: Southeastern by 36.7 yards per game.

Pass defense shows SE No. 1 in the GAC, giving up 178.3 yards per game. EC checks in at sixth with 222.3 ypg. Edge: Southeastern by 44 yards per game.

EC leads the GAC in interceptions with 17 for 243 return yards and one TD. SE is last with six picks for 126 return yards and two TDs. Edge: EC in number of interceptions and return yards, Southeastern in touchdowns.

Field position is usually critical in rivalry games of this sort. Unfortunately, the Tigers own this statistic.

EC averages 38.1 yards on 67 punts while SE averages 31.8 yards on 38 punts.

What do all of these numbers mean? They mean Storm fans should be at Norris Field in Ada Saturday afternoon.
