BOKCHITO – The Rock Creek Lady Mustangs fell short to the visiting Ft. Towson Lady Tigers on Tuesday night, 47-43. The Lady Mustangs (2-4) held on to a one-point lead heading into the final quarter, but the Lady Tigers started off the fourth with a couple of three-pointers to take a 36-31 lead.

The Lady Mustangs stayed within striking distance and Julie Layton scored on a layup to cut the lead to two points with eleven seconds left on the clock.

Shania Cloud hit a pair of free-throws for the Lady Tigers to make it 47-43 and the Lady Mustangs were unable to score in the final seconds.

Cloud lead the Lady Tigers in scoring with 27 points. “We played good defense and executed but we just couldn’t make shots towards the end of the game,” said Rock Creek coach Clyde Young. Devyn Johnson was the leading scorer for the Lady Mustangs and finished with twelve points. Layton finished with ten points. Adree Young and Shaina Holland each scored nine points.

The Lady Mustangs came out of the gate with some aggressive play on the defensive end and jumped out to a 17-5 lead after the first quarter. “I was happy with the way we started the game,” said Young. “We jumped on them, our press was good, and we made our layups and short shots.” The Lady Tigers answered with some solid defense of their own in the second quarter and cut the Rock Creek lead to four points at halftime.

The Lady Tigers took the lead in the final minutes of the third, but Holland scored to make it 31-30, Rock Creek heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Mustangs will host the Rock Creek Tournament this weekend with first round games beginning on Thursday.

Boys:

David Dill and Leo Roper both scored in double-figures as the Rock Creek Mustangs defeated the Ft. Towson Tigers 39-30 in the second game of the evening.

“I thought we hustled tonight and did a good job of getting to the loose balls,” said Rock Creek coach Rob Frederick after the game.

Dill led the Mustangs in scoring with fifteen points and Roper finished with ten points. Toby McIntire scored seven points; Cameron Hammond scored three points; and Nash Hestily and Bronson Burns each finished with two points to round out the scoring for Rock Creek.

The Mustangs trailed 5-0 early in the game but closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to take the lead. It remained close in the second quarter and the Mustangs held on to a two-point lead at halftime. Roper scored eight of his ten points in the first half. In the third quarter, Dill started feeling it and scored ten of his fifteen points to give the Mustangs a 30-22 lead.

The Mustangs increased their lead to ten points in a low-scoring fourth quarter and held on for the victory.

“I thought that Leo Roper and Toby McIntire kept us in the game and then Nash Hestily and Tyler Parker gave us a spark in the second half that helped us get the W,” said Frederick.

The win over the Tigers will give the Mustangs a little momentum as they get set to play in the opening round of the Rock Creek Tournament on Thursday. “I would like for us to make a run in the tournament,” said Frederick. “But right now we need improve offensively and work on our execution.”
