Durant City Council recognized two city employees for their work Tuesday evening Dec. 11 during the council’s regular monthly meeting.
Steve Gray of the Water Treatment received the Oklahoma Municipal League (OML) Service Award for his services to the city.
Richard Gilbert received the Added Value award and a check for $500 for his work in keeping crew members safe.
Both men were recognized during the public hearing portion of the meeting Tuesday evening.
Also addressed during the meeting was the Durant Landfill’s request to lower out of county prices to use the landfill from $78 to $34.
The Durant Landfill is currently the highest priced landfill for out of county use in the area. A purposeful action ten years ago raised the prices when the landfill was exceeding its capacity.
The landfill now occupies a greater amount of land and could use money from out of county use to purchase new equipment.
The request was approved by council with the condition that the landfill be closely monitored to insure over-use by out of county entities does not occur.
The council also approved vacating 179 feet of an alley beside the First Baptist Church of Durant in order for the church to use the area.
The portion of the alley to be vacated will not block any residents from accessing their homes or businesses but will allow the church to build on the location.
