The Durant Lions had a rough time of it at the Holiday Festival at Ardmore on Friday and Saturday. The Lions dropped three games. On Friday, the Lions fell to Bartlesville Bruins 77-37 in game one. In the second round, the Lions let the Ardmore Tigers slip past with 45-43 loss and on Saturday Durant was beaten by the Western Heights Jets, 58-56.
Friday Game One:
It was a rough game for Durant against the Bartlesville Bruins. The Bruins began the game with 9-2 run and the Lions trailed 14-6 heading into the second quarter. Cole Hughes had 4 points for Durant and Will Engle had 2 points.
It didn’t get easier for the Lions as they were outscored 25-11 in the second period. The Bruins would go runs of 6-5, 6-2, 7-4 and a 8-0 run at the end of the second period. The Lions trailed 41-17 at the half. Hughes had 5 points for Durant, Cameron Schuessler, Zac Cater and Jalen Harris all had 2 points apiece.
Durant began to find it’s shots in the third period, but couldn’t stop the Bruins from scoring in bunches. Durant was outscored in the period 26-13 as the Bruins made five 3-pointers in the period. The Lions trailed 65-30.
Then in fourth period the Lions shooting owes continued as they only scored 7 points. In the middle of the quarter the Bruins went a 12-3 run. The Lions scored the last two buckets of game and fell the Bruins 77-37.
Friday Game Two:
The Durant Lions faced off against a team they beat earlier this season, the Ardmore Tigers. It was battle for three quarters. The Lions had a 41-32 lead to begin the fourth quarter, but Ardmore came alive and slipped by with a 45-43 win.
Niether team could stop the other from scoring. With 1:15 remaining in the first period, the score was tied at 14. Then Cater and Hughes both dropped buckets and the end of the period and took a 18-14 lead into the second frame. Schuessler and James Donelan, Cater and Harris all had 4 points apiece.
The battle continued in the second period. The Tigers went on a 8-3 run to take a 22-21 lead, then the Lions answered back with a mini 4-0 run and took a 25-24 lead into halftime.
The Tigers gave the Lions a scare in the third period. Ardmore went a 8-4 run and led 32-29 with 3:16 left in the period. Then the Lions took over and went on a 12-0 run led by Hughes 8 points and Cater had 4 points. The Lions led 41-32.
The the unthinkable happen, the Lions couldn’t score but 2 points in the fourth period as the Tigers scored 13 points and won 45-43.
Saturday Game Three:
After coming off a loss to Ardmore the night before, the Lions regrouped for it’s next game against Western Heights Jets. However the Lions loss another close game, falling the Jets 58-56.
Things didn’t start well for the Lions as they were outscored in the first period 26-15.
The Lions didn’t give up and kept pace with the Jets in second period as both teams scored 16 points. With 4:13 left in the period the score was 20-31 in favor of the Jets. Then the Lions went on 11-8 run and brought them within 8 points of the Jets with 30 seconds left on the clock, but the Jets would score the next 4 points and the Lions trailed at the half, 43-31.
The Lions came out hot to begin the third period and outscored the Jets 10-2 and trailed 41-45. Harris was big in the period scoring 6 points.
Both teams traded buckets in the fourth period. The Lions trailed by 3 points for most of the period, then with only 4 seconds left on the clock Durant’s Jalen Harris tossed up a 3-pointer to tied the game 56-56. But the Jets won the game at the free throw line and beat Durant 58-56.
