Team-oriented basketball helped the Savage Storm to a 68-59 win over Southern Arkansas on Thursday, as Southeastern continues to protect the Bloomer Sullivan court with a 6-0 home mark.
The victory also moves Southeastern (8-3) into first place in the Great American Conference with a 4-1 record against familiar foes. Southwestern (3-1) lost to Harding on Thursday and slipped into second place.
The Storm now carries its four-game winning streak – this season’s second such run – into a Saturday contest against Arkansas-Monticello (6-4, 1-3 GAC). Game time is 4 p.m. at Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
Andris Misters went 4-for-7 from behind the arc and led Southeastern with 14 points. Mateus Oliveira and Antonio Worthy had 12 points each, while Chris Roussell and Travis Timmons notched 11 apiece. Steven Kohli came up with eight points (seven coming in the first half).
Misters, a 6-5 freshman from Latvia, set the tone early by downing a pair of threes to start the game. The Savage Storm quietly built a lead behind Worthy’s inside presence. A three-pointer for Timmons gave Southeastern a 31-20 lead late in the half and they took a 36-25 lead into the halftime break.
The Storm put it in cruise control in the second half, leading by as much as 17 but actually getting outscored 34-32 by the Muleriders (5-5, 2-3 GAC).
Southeastern shot 41.2 percent from the field, enough to best the 37 percent mark of Southern Arkansas. The Muleriders were 14-16 from the free throw line, but the Storm got there more often with a 19-30 mark.
Southeastern won the stat battle in rebounds (37 to 33), assists (17 to 10) and steals (13 to 9).
