Doris (Maxwell) Harris-Estes, born June 10, 1922 in Red River County, Texas, to James and Wilma Maxwell, passed from this life on January 4, 2013 in Durant at 90 years of age.

Doris loved her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. She enjoyed reading her Bible and praying every day. Doris was a generous servant to others all her life without expecting anything in return. Her home and heart were open to all. Although she did not have children of her own she gave everything she had and her unconditional love to her foster children – Debbie, David, and Danny Harrison and grandchildren – April and Deanea.

Doris was “Sis” to James Maxwell, Dorothy Rice, Harold Maxwell who preceded her in death and to Reba Jones of Bokchito, Ann Lauderback of Belen N.M., Martha Eades of Oklahoma City and sister-in-law Elise Maxwell of Sherman, Texas. She loved her family and was known as Aunt Doris to 5 generations of nieces and nephews, especially Dorothy, Dessie and Billy Joe; as second mom to Cynthia Williams; and as neighbor to all her knew her.

Many people remember Doris as an excellent waitress who served at Easter’s Café and for the home cooked meals at “Doc’s Place”. She served as nurse at Bryan Memorial Hospital. Most will remember for her kind words and pleasant smile.

Doris served in several Pentecostal churches and was currently a member of Reynolds Chapel Church. Doris was a member of the Slide-Up Home Demonstration club and won many blue ribbons at Bryan County Fair for her canning, sewing, home decorating and gardening products. She loved gardening and always had a yard full of flowers.

Doris married Albert “Doc” Harris in October, 1937 and he passed away in 1982. Doris was his loyal companion in all his ventures. She hand-painted the ceilings of the houses he built with beautiful circular patterns. She meticulously cleaned each house before it went on the market and kept his finances in order.
