Another close one slipped away from the Durant Lady Lions on Friday, as Hugo needed overtime to get past the home team by a score of 63-57.
A stellar performance from Morgan Steve (23 points) was in vain, but the fourth-quarter comeback from eight points down was inspiring nonetheless. Hugo’s Tracy Holman scored eight points in overtime as the Lady Buffaloes pulled away 19-13 in the extra frame.
Durant trailed 8-2 before Steve and Rheagan Jones caught fire. Kylie Manning’s baseline jumper at the buzzer gave the Lady Lions an 11-10 lead.
That advantage slipped away as Hugo clogged the Lady Lion passing lanes and started hitting transition baskets. The Lady Buffs outscored Durant 14-10 in the second to take a 24-21 halftime lead.
The third quarter was a virtual stalemate, as Steve and Hugo’s Tori Tarkington matched each other with seven points. Hugo led 33-29 going to the fourth quarter.
The Lady Buffs opened the fourth with four straight to put the Lady Lions in an eight-point hole. A three from Steve cut into the lead but another 4-0 run had Hugo on top 41-33 with 4:45 to go.
Durant went on an 11-3 run to tie the game and force overtime, sparked by another three points from Steve – this time the hard way. In the final minute, Kenzi Clapp went to the line and hit a pair of free throws to get Durant within a basket.
The Lady Lions were forced to foul, but Hugo’s Sarah Simpson missed the one-and-one with 26 seconds on the clock. A critical jump ball call at the 11 second juncture favored the Lady Lions.
Katie Caraway saved her only basket of the game as best-for-last, hitting a game-tying short jumper on a save from Steve as time expired in regulation.
Durant briefly held an overtime lead on a three from Clapp, and Caraway hit a pair of free throws in the final minute to get the Lady Lions within three, but Hugo was able to hit baskets and free throws down the stretch to finish ahead.
Behind Steve, Clapp scored 11, Jones 8, Sierra Wilhite 6, Caraway 5, Alexa Richards and manning two each.
Durant (2-9) will visit the No. 17 (3A) Atoka LadyCats on Tuesday.
