COLBERT – The Boswell Scorpions and Silo Rebels both won opening games of the Bryan County Tournament on Tuesday, setting up a semifinal between the two best records in the county so far this season.

Boswell advanced by virtue of a 62-50 win over the host Leopards. Markell Henderson scored 28 and Cameron Collier added 20 as the Scorps rode a second half surge for their 16th win of the season.

Silo dominated Achille 47-25 thanks to Kendall Shives’ 19-point night. The Rebel defense held the potent Achille tandem of Austin Beene and Bradley McKnight to 10 points each.

This scenario sets up an 8:45 p.m. Friday battle at Bloomer Sullivan Arena in Durant between Boswell (16-4) and Silo (15-5). The Scorps are now enjoying an 11-game win streak, which includes a 66-60 win over the Rebels last month.

“We were fortunate to go (to Silo) and get that win,” said Boswell Coach Parker Harless. “It’s going to be a battle. We’ll have to play well to beat them Friday.”

During the first half on Tuesday, the Scorps had all they could handle from Colbert. The game started with danger from deep, as Boswell hit four from downtown and the Leopards struck twice.

This included a buzzer-beating trey from Garrett Work which cut the Boswell lead to 19-12. Colbert got within a basket in the second before a Caleb Brown three gave the Scorps some breathing room. By halftime, Boswell held a slim 30-26 lead.

“I thought we came out a little flat,” said Harless. “In the second half we went to a straight man-to-man defense and our intensity picked up.”

Sloppy passing by Colbert led to Scorpion steals and two quick baskets for Collier, sparking a 10-0 start to the second half. Boswell outscored the Leopards 17-5 and took a 16-point lead into the break.

Then the Boswell stars delivered the dagger: Collier got a midcourt steal and hit Henderson for a breakaway dunk for the exclamation point.

Five Leopards scored six or more points: Preston Rice (10), Garrett Work (8), Caleb Shoemake (6), Charles Adams (6), and James Hair (6).

Silo boys 47 Achille 25

The Rebels opened the first half on a 27-6 outburst and went on to defeat Achille 47-25 in the Bryan County Tournament on Tuesday.

The Eagles came out of the locker room and went on an 8-0 run punctuated by a court-length baseball pass from Austin Beene to a streaking Bradley McKnight who hit off the glass. But the Rebels rebuilt the lead for good thereafter.

“Both of them are really good and they spend a lot of time in the gym,” said Rebels Coach Dax Simon of the Achille duo. “We did a good job of clogging up the lane, and we have some length so when we do that, we have a pretty good chance to win a ballgame.”

Kendall Shives led the Rebels with 19 points, followed by Lance House (7), Leonard Sandler (5), Jarris Hamilton (5), Andrew Bolin (4) and Hunter Jackson (4) among scoring leaders.

Beene and McKnight combined for 20, and each was held to three points in the first half.
