The truck driver killed in a Thursday morning accident south of Durant has been identified as Kenneth G. Anders, Jr., of Girard, Ill.

Durant Police Lt. Chris Marcy issued a statement which explained how the accident occurred in “dense fog with visibility of less than an eighth of a mile.”

The four-vehicle accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. Thursday when a semi truck “swerved to miss vehicles who had stopped at the signal light” at US 69/75 and Choctaw Road. The truck, driven by Anders, struck a blue pickup and started a chain reaction accident, according to the DPD statement.

The truck also struck a four-door gold car and another tractor trailer. Anders, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the gold car had to be extricated by Durant Fire Department personnel. She was transported to Texoma Medical Center.

Names and conditions of other victims were not released. Medical helicopters were requested to assist the victims but they were unable to fly due to the dense fog.

The highway was closed to southbound traffic for nearly an hour, with traffic re-routed in Durant and halted in Caddo altogether. Traffic was flowing normally by about 10 a.m. Thursday.
