The Red River rivalry was in full force at Bloomer Sullivan Arena on Thursday, as Colbert’s Preston Rice hit a free throw to cement a 47-46 tournament win over Achille.
Achille Eagle Austin Beene led all scorers with 25 points, but a contested three at the buzzer sailed wide as the Eagles finished 0-2 in the Bryan County Tournament.
The championship semifinals will be held today, also at SOSU in Durant: 5 p.m. – Colbert girls vs. Rock Creek; 6:15 p.m. – Tushka boys vs. Calera; 7:30 p.m. – Caddo girls vs. Calera; 8:45 p.m. – Silo boys vs. Boswell.
Saturday’s consolation finals are now set: Tushka girls will face Silo at 12:30 p.m., while the Caddo and Colbert boys will tangle at 2 p.m.
Beene and T.J. Childree hit from downtown to give the Eagles a 24-18 lead before Colbert tied the game on a pair of threes just before the half. The Leopards rattled off 15 points in the third, helped by a pair of steals and finger roll for Garrett Work.
Beene was fouled on a pair of threes in the final minutes and went 6-for-6 from the line. But the Leopards were able to press the Eagle shooters until Beene elevated and hit a three to tie the game 46-46 with 42 seconds remaining.
Achille fouled Rice as he drove the baseline with five seconds to go. He split the free throws, giving the Eagles one last look at a game-winning shot but it didn’t go.
Charles Adams led Colbert with 14 points and nine rebounds; Work had 10 points; Rice scored nine; James hair had eight; Caleb Shoemake scored six. Behind Beene’s 25, Childree scored 11 for Achille, Bradley McKnight scored eight and Lane Manry finished with two.
Caddo boys 45 Rock Creek 37
Senior Peyton Joines and freshman Patrick Joines scored 11 points each to corral the Mustangs 45-37 on Thursday in the Bryan County Tournament.
The Bruins took an early lead until Leo Roper’s three capped a 7-0 Mustang run and gave Rock Creek a 15-10 lead.
Caddo took a 20-17 lead at the break after holding Rock Creek to just two second-quarter points. A pair of threes from Patrick Joines put the Bruins ahead for good and they held a 32-26 lead after three quarters.
For Caddo, Blake Phillips added eight points, Rosendo Chavez had six, Ryan Minyard had five and Jacob Ross finished with four. The Mustangs got a game-high 15 from Roper, eight from Burns, six for David Dill and four from Tyler Parker.
Silo girls 41 Boswell 38
Rachel Grider lit up the arc for 19 points to held the Lady Rebels squeak past Boswell 41-38 on Thursday.
Boswell held a 17-8 lead early in the game on three-point plays from Tasha Vinyard and Stacee Bacon. The lead was still 21-14 before Silo ended the half on a 6-2 run to close the gap.
Grider hit a pair of threes to help the Lady Rebels build a five-point lead as time ticked away. Boswell’s Nicole Pittman laid one off the glass to close within a basket at 40-38.
In the final minute, Bacon missed a three, and the Lady Scorpions were forced to put Hannah Bourne at the line for Silo. She went 1-for-2, but Boswell could not find an answer with one last look.
Bourne scored 10 for Silo, Kenslie Stanley was held to seven, Jacque Hendricks had three and Katlyn Halley scored two. Vinyard led Boswell with 14, Pittman added 10, Callie McIntyre 5, Stacee Bacon 3, while Jayci Braudrick, Breosha Williams and Madison Cress all had a basket each.
Tushka girls 34 Achille 26
Kelsey Chambers scored 16 and Logan Carbaugh added 10 for the Tushka Tigers, who recorded their first win of the Bryan County Tournament on Thursday, 34-26 over Achille.
Tushka was ahead 8-2 before Maggie Back’s buzzer-beater ended the first quarter. She later tied the game on a breakaway layup. But all of the Lady Tigers’ second quarter points came on threes as they held a 17-8 halftime lead.
Achille went on a 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter, but could only get within four points before time ran out. Kayla Wright led the Lady Eagles with 12 points, Back had six and Marissa Williams added five.
