Girls Consolation Final: Silo Lady Rebels – 36 Tushka Lady Tigers – 33
The Lady Tigers and Lady Rebels kicked off the final day of action in the Bryan County Tournament on Saturday with an exciting game that came down to the last possession.
With a 36-33 Silo lead in the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers had a chance to tie with twelve seconds remaining on the clock. Kelsey Chambers barely missed a three-point attempt from the corner and the Lady Tigers were unable to get the ball back to the perimeter for a final shot as time expired.
“The important thing is how we finished,” said Tushka head coach Seth Karn after the tough loss. “We could have quit and we didn’t. We fought like we were supposed to and I give Silo a lot of credit.”
The Lady Tigers led 17-12 at halftime but Kenslie Stanley had a huge third quarter for Silo with 13 points. The Lady Rebels had a 26-20 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Rebels continued to play tough defense in the fourth but Tushka wouldn’t go away. Kayla Wilhite scored to pull the Lady Tigers within one with 1:25 left to play. Hannah Bourne answered with a couple of free-throws to give Silo a 36-33 lead.
The Lady Tigers had the ball with 34 seconds left on the clock, but were unable to get a shot to fall.
Chambers led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 11 points. Carbaugh finished with 8 points and Katelyn Cook scored 2 points. Jayden Eaves and Wilhite each scored 6 points.
Stanley led all Silo scorers with 19 points. Rachel Grider finished with 7 points, Bourne scored 6 points, and Jacque Hendricks and Riley Newton each had two points. “Rachel (Grider) and Kenslie (Stanley) are usually pretty hard to stop and they hurt us today,” said Karn. “I thought the difference in the game was the offensive rebounding and I think we just gave them too many second chance points.”
Boys Consolation Final: Colbert Leopards – 46 Caddo Bruins – 39
Preston Rice scored 14 points and Caleb Shoemake finished with 10 points as the Leopards held on to win the second game of the day over the Bruins.
With the game tied 14-14 at halftime, the Leopards came out in the third quarter and seized the momentum. Rice and Shoemake each knocked down a three-pointer to get the Colbert offense rolling. The Leopards were also able to force some turnovers that led to fast-break buckets from Trevor Cole and Charles Adams.
“I thought that we really picked up our defensive energy in the third quarter,” said Colbert coach Tony Robinson. “We forced some turnovers and that helped our offense.”
Patrick Joines had a couple of three-pointers as well for the Bruins in the third quarter to keep things close. The Leopards led 33-25 heading into the fourth. The Bruins were able to get within two points of the Colbert lead in the fourth quarter with a pair of free-throws from Ryan Minyard.
Rice hit another three-pointer to end the threat as the Leopards hit their free-throws down the stretch to pull away. Adams finished with 7 points for the Leopards and Cole scored 2 points. “I thought this was our best effort all year,” said Robinson.“We executed and I think we are getting better and better.”
Minyard led the Bruins in scoring with 12 points. Patrick Joines finished with 10 points and Peyton Joines scored 8. Blake Phillips scored 4 points, Aaron Purkins scored 3, and Jacob Ross chipped in 2 points.
Girls Third Place: Caddo Lady Bruins – 32 Rock Creek Lady Mustangs – 20
The Lady Bruins rebounded from a second round loss to the Calera Lady Bulldogs with a victory over Rock Creek for the third place trophy.
With a twelve-point cushion, the Lady Bruins ran out the clock in the fourth quarter for the win.
“I thought we played good defense today but we haven’t shot the ball well in a while,” said Caddo coach Vernon Johnson. “We live from the perimeter and if we do a good job of shooting the ball, we can play well.”
The Lady Bruins hit six three-pointers as a team in the first half that helped them take a 24-10 lead at halftime. The Lady Bruins continued to play solid defense held on for the win despite a low-scoring second half for both teams.
Chelsey Pilkilton led the Lady Bruins in scoring with 10 points. Allison Joines finished with 9 points, Shelby Dellinger scored 8, Tobi Miller scored 3, and Ricki Braziell rounded out the scoring for Caddo with 2 points. Harlie Heflin led the Lady Mustangs in scoring with 11 points. Julie Layton scored 5 points, Teigan Munson and Macy Eiler each finished with 2 points.
