COLBERT — The Boswell Scorpions finished their slate of regular season games on Monday with a 65-45 win over the Leopards. Now, it’s on to the playoffs.
The Scorps are 21-4 and moved up a notch to fourth place in the CoachesAid poll of Class A schools this week. Their next game is Saturday as they await the winner of a district playoff game between Smithville and Soper.
“We feel good about where we are now,” said Boswell Coach Parker Harless. “We’ve won 16 straight. We’ve just got to make sure we’re healthy and fresh for Saturday night.”
The Scorps kept the win streak alive with early momentum against the Leopards, but the home team got back into the game in the third quarter before a late surge from Boswell closed it out.
Boswell went up 7-0 before Charles Adams hit a three to get the Leopards on the board. James Hair then scored seven of his team-high 11 points to keep Colbert within striking distance as Boswell took a 20-15 lead.
But the Scorps started confidently slashing to the basket, hitting four early free throws as part of a 9-0 run to start the second. Caleb Shoemake hit a pair of threes just shy of halftime for Colbert, but the Scorpions still took a 36-23 lead into the locker room.
Then the Leopards came out sizzling. Three-bombs from Preston Rice and James Hair cut Boswell’s lead down to 39-32. But the Scorps soon got the lead back up to 10 as time ran down.
Boswell then outscored Colbert 17-7 in the fourth quarter to finish off the Leopards.
Markell Henderson led all scorers with 20 points (11 from free throws), Tracy Brown had 15 and Cameron Collier had 13. Cameron Roberts – whose three-point shooting was a huge factor in last year’s Scorpion playoff run – had 11 points and hit three from behind the arc.
After James Hair’s 11, Caleb Shoemake (with a trio of his own from downtown) and Preston Rice scored nine each; Charles Adams had eight, Peyton Whitehead contributed big minutes in the paint and scored four; Trevor Cole and Garrett Work scored two apiece.
