DALLAS, Texas — A four-run seventh inning powered by a two-run single by Mark Frank helped Southeastern open the 2013 season with a 5-3 road win over Northwood on Tuesday afternoon in Dallas, Texas.
The win is the second-straight opening day win and avenges pair of losses to the Knights last season.
The contest was not a particularly offensive affair as the Savage Storm tallied four hits a s team and each team had to fight through three defensive errors in the contest.
Ryan Salter, Vance Woodruff, Aaron Chalk and Mark Frank each collected a hit, with Frank adding the two RBI, while Chalk and Salter each drove in a run as well.
The SE pitching was a little further ahead with Brandon Marris earning the start and going 4.0 innings with a run on two hits and three strikeouts before handing the ball to Eddie Cervantes.
Cervantes would pick up the win after allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with three strikeouts.
Levi Lewis came on to toss the final 2.0 innings and earn the first save of the season after retiring the side in consecutive innings, registering three strikeouts in the process.
SE jumped ahead first in the fourth inning when Chalk doubled through the right side and Woodruff would score from second after doubling earlier in the inning.
NU would knot the score at one however when Isaac Maturino connected on a single that plated Herb Romero.
The Knights would add another run in the fifth on a RBI single by the leadoff hitter to mount a 2-1 lead.
SE answered in a big way in the top of the seventh with Chalk and Cameron Mann reaching on back-to-back walks to open the inning and scoring on Franks single that chopped over the second baseman’s head to put SE back in front at 3-2.
Two batters later, Salter would drive in Nick Grimmett who reached on a fielder’s choice earlier in the inning, and Salter would follow up by stealing second and moving to third on an error only to score on a wild pitch to make the score 5-2.
NU would add another run in the bottom of the seventh, but SE would hold off a rally for the 5-3 win.
The Storm will be back on the road for the weekend to play in the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach South Texas Baseball Classic held at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas, Feb. 8-10.
