Monday, Feb. 11, marked the second year in a row that Calera Police Chief Don Hyde has gotten a new hair cut in the name of the Special Olympics.
Last year was the first year Hyde and his men participated in the Tip a Cop program that raises funds for Special Olympics.
Last year he had said that if the Calera Police Department raised $1,500 he would shave his head. When the group raised over that amount, he did so.
This year the challenge was to raise $2500. Hyde said if this goal was met he would get a “Fo-Hawk” colored black and gold.
The group was assigned to Roma Italian restaurant and competed against the Bryan County Sheriff’s office, Durant Police Department and Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Calera Police Department raised $2,751, beating all other groups. Hyde said that next year’s goal is $5,000 dollars and he may let the student of Calera choose what happens to his hair.
“Our little town of Calera went into Durant and raised the most money,” Hyde announced to the high school students present to watch him get his hair cut. Hyde said it is not about him, his department or his hair cut. It is about the children.
Calera Special Education Teacher Nicole Ticknor said that she has five to six children that she is hoping to get into the Special Olympics.
She said it has been years since Calera has actively participated in the events, but feels it is a good way to get children in special education out of the classroom and into the community.
“Our kids are so excited about participating,” said Ticknor. The first step in their participation will be to go watch an upcoming talent show which Chief Hyde will be helping to judge.
