Two people died in a house fire early Wednesday in the 200 block of West Tennessee Street in Durant. Two other occupants escaped with minor injuries.
Durant Fire Marshal Wade Boyd said firefighters responded to the house fire around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.
“When we got on scene, there were flames coming from every corner of the house. It was too hot to go inside, so we fought the fire from outside which takes longer,” he said. “There were four people in the house, two got out and two didn’t.”
Identities of the victims were not available as of press time Wednesday. The two survivors escaped with minor burns and refused medical treatment at the scene, according to Boyd.
Neighbors said the two victims were an 18-year-old male and a 23-year-old female. The bodies were removed around 9 a.m. Wednesday.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office and the state medical examiner were on the scene to conduct investigations. “Once the medical examiner is done, we’ll have to figure out where the fire started,” Boyd said. “There’s quite a bit of debris in there.”
The fire was the latest in a string of tragedies to befall Bryan County over the last 10 days. One boy was killed and several people injured in an accident in Blue two Sundays ago, then two people were killed in a shooting incident in Bennington last week.
