On January 15-16th, nine youth wrestlers (Cory Hicks, Colton Hicks, Cory Hicks, Tagen Jamison, Preston Lewis, Josh McKim, Cooper McCoy, Chance Parsons, & Cason Reese) competed at the OKWA state tournament, held in Tulsa at the Expo Square Pavilion. Three of these youth qualified to compete in the tournament finals, and all three of these wrestlers walked away with medals.
Both Cody Hicks and Cooper McCoy received 4th place in their age and weight divisions. Hicks was never taken down by any opponent during the tournament, and he succeeded in becoming the first wrestler from Oklahoma to score on the tournament champion during the 2012-13 season.
McCoy was down in the third round of the match before his final competition, and a loss would have prevented him from being able to compete for 3rd and 4th place. He was able to come back with the win in the last few seconds of the match. Even though both he and Hicks lost their final matches, both were extremely close in score to their opponents.
Cory Hicks qualified to compete for the state championship in the 8 & under age division at 75lbs. The final score of the match was 12-2, with Hicks coming out victorious. His win resulted in a first-ever OKWA state championship for Durant Pride wrestling program.
Cory is currently ranked 2nd in the nation, and he plans to compete at the upcoming national tournament in Reno, NV. A win at this tournament could result in him being the top-ranked wrestler in the nation, possibly qualifying him to compete as an American All-Star Wrestler during the 2013-14 wrestling season. The coaching of both Walt Dorman for the past four wrestling seasons and Hicks’s brother and coach, Colby Hicks (former DHS wrestler), are to be largely credited for the success of both Cory and his older brother, Cody.
