Tonight is the last call for Southeastern’s home basketball for 2012-13.

The added bonus is that it’s East Central. If you’ve been a Southeastern fan through the years, this is everthing you need to know to make your way out to Bloomer Sullivan Arena.

The ladies (it’s sometimes difficult to imagine that word connected to this rivalry) tip off at 5:30 tonight and the men are slated for a 7:30 start.

Nobody missed this rivalry back in the day. Didn’t matter about the location. Our fans went there, their fans came here.

Foreign objects were in one stretch a major part of the festivities. Noise-makers were front and center. Fraternities and sororities and civic clubs had contests to claim bragging rights for attendance. Fire chiefs stayed alert for over-crowding of gyms and doors were locked on numerous occasions. Lucky fans found seats. Late-comers were lucky to find standing room that would embarrass a self-respecting sardine.

Reporters from the Daily Oklahoman and Tulsa World, along with local media, were regulars at courtside.

Fans will remember when Southeastern had a mascot and also some memorable moments when East Central’s Tiger was on the floor at the same time.

One game stands out at East Central. The mascots used to “battle” with each other at halftime and time-outs. The Savage carried a spear, of course. The Savage at this time was Walta Jenkins (Wahoo Dunkem) and the mascots were entertaining at East Central.

It’s hard to believe, but even the mascots could get caught up in the rivalry. After some “playful” pushing and shoving, the Tiger jerked the spear away from the Savage. That was bad enough, of course, but the Tiger then made the mistake of jamming the spear into the Savage’s stomach.

Very poor plan.

Wahoo Dunkem went after the Tiger. When last seen, the Tiger was leaving the court with Wahoo in hot pursuit. Then, of course, we had the identified flying objects entering the playing court. Home fans would hold up newspapers when opponents were being introduced.

Once at EC, women’s intimate articles were thrown onto the court. Not believing it was what I thought it was, I took my camera and went out to obtain photographic evidence.

It was what I thought it was, but before I could get the picture, I fielded a grapefruit the size of a softball with my stomach.

Once at SE, the Tigers had been introduced and were in a huddle on the court. Out of the packed – really packed – stands came a circular object, curving gracefully out of the northwest corner to land in the middle of the huddle. It was a cowpie the size of a large pizza. A fairly fresh cowpie. No idea how it held together during the flight.

This was in the time before political correctness sold America down the toilet. This was in the time when one could say to a fellow student or co-worker that they really looked good in that dress/suit/shoes/whatever.

One could say something like that without fear of going to jail.

Why would anyone take the time to clean up and dress nicely if not for someone else to notice? Political correctness has killed more than all of our wars and automobile accidents and natural disasters combined.

Political correctness has killed the soul of our country.

Southeastern and East Central play basketball tonight in Bloomer Sullivan Arena. Come on out and remember the good times.

Coach Ron Faubion’s LadyStorm softballers will host Southern Arkansas in 1 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday Great American Conference doubleheaders.

With last weekend’s weather canceling the scheduled GAC opener at East Central, this will be Southeastern’s first softball conference action of the year.

Coach Mike Metheny’s baseballers will host Harding in a noon doubleheader Saturday and a 2 p.m. single game Sunday in GAC play.

There is bleacher seating at both softball and baseball fields and also room for your lawn chairs if you prefer. Snow is not in the forecast. It will be cool. Spray on the shiver repellant and come join the fun.
