Two Durant Lions are headed to the state powerlifting finals, according to Durant football coach Byron Cordell.

Jacob Barnhart and Conner Ruminer will represent the Lions on Friday at the state meet in McLoud.

Barnhart, a senior who was a lineman on the Lions football team, placed first overall at last week’s regional powerlifting meet in Hartshorne. He was also best in the 198-pound class, with a 505-pound squat, 275 bench press and a deadlift of 610.

“It’s definitely a different lifestyle,” Barnhart said of his dedication to powerlifting. “It’s not just an hour in the gym, it’s the right diet and putting in as much time as you can.”

Ruminer, a junior and outside linebacker during football season, said the weightlifting experience will help him this fall. “Whatever I do here will transfer onto the football field. It’s good to get to compete and show your strength.”

Ruminer placed first in the 181-pound weight class with a 360-pound squat, 285 bench press and a 440 deadlift.
