Lady Leopards sweep doubleheader

COLBERT – The Colbert Lady Leopards added two more checkmarks to the win column on Monday afternoon with victories over the Caddo Lady Bruins and the Caney Lady Cougars. Colbert defeated the Lady Bruins 10-2 in the first game and then followed with a 12-4 victory over Caney.

The Lady Bruins jumped out to an early lead in the opener with two runs crossing the plate in the top of the first. Breawna McCraw led off the Colbert-half of the first inning with a double and then scored on a heads-up base running play to cut the Caddo lead in half. Jancey Weger and Kayla Strange hit back-to-back RBI singles to give the Lady Leopards a 3-2 lead after the first inning.

The Lady Bruins threatened to score again in the top of the second with the bases loaded and one out but McCraw turned an unassisted double play to help the Lady Leopards get out of the jam.

The Lady Leopards blew things open in the bottom of the third with six runs crossing the plate. Haylie McGowan and Weger each knocked in a run and Strange followed with an RBI double that scored two more. Hanna Wilson also drove in two Colbert runs with an inside-the-park home run that made it 9-2.

The Lady Leopards added one more run in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice-fly RBI from Jordan Weger. McCraw scored from third base to end the game. McGowan, Strange, and Jancey Weger each went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Lady Leopards. Strange finished with 3 RBI and Jancey Weger and Wilson each had 2 RBI.

Game Two:

The second game had the makings of a close one in the early innings. The Lady Cougars scored one run in the top half of the first but the Lady Leopards came back with two runs in the bottom of the first. McCraw led off with a single and then scored on an RBI triple from Jordan Weger to tie the game, 1-1.

Ginavee Mowles followed with an RBI single to give the Lady Leopards the lead. The Lady Leopards loaded the bases in the bottom of the second but were only able to get one run in. Kayli Knickle scored from third base on a sacrifice-fly RBI from Makayla Pierce to make it 3-1, Colbert.

The Lady Cougars tied the game in the top of the third. The Lady Leopards ran away with things in the bottom of the fourth with another big inning.

Colbert batted around in the inning as nine runs scored. With two outs, Wilson drew a walk to load the bases. The Lady Leopards smacked six RBI base hits in a row to take a commanding lead. Pierce, McCraw, and Skylar Phillips each had RBI doubles in the streak. McGowan scored on an RBI single from Samantha Cummins to make it 12-3, Colbert after four innings.

McCraw went 2-for-3 in the second game with a double and 1 RBI; Jordan Weger went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI; Mowles went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI; and Phillips went 1-for-2 with 1 RBI. Next on the schedule for the Lady Leopards will be a home game against the Calera Lady Bulldogs on March 12.
