Caddo Schools was visited by the Farm to You program Friday March 8. The program is designed to teach children not only where food comes from but also how it affects your body.
This interactive walk-through is provided by a collaboration of the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service (Family and consumer sciences, 4H and agricultural education program), OSU Department of Nutritional Sciences, Oklahoma State Department of health (WIC service) and Southwest Dairy Farmers.
Students from kindergarten through sixth grade moved through a series of displays beginning with the “Hamburger Farm” then to the market and on to the body.
Each display in the body told student about that part of the body and how certain food helped and hurt it.
Students moved from the mouth to the stomach, small intestine, muscle, bone and finally skin.
According to State Coordinator Lisa Taylor, the program emphasizes where food comes from and the importance of farming as well as to eat healthy and how food is digested.
The displays were set up by the Caddo eighth grade class and demonstrations were given by Caddo FCCLA members.
The Farm to You program has been to 70 of the 77 counties in Oklahoma. The program visits schools, fairs and health fairs around Oklahoma.
