McLOUD - Zach McKimmy of Caddo earned the state powerlifting championship in his weight class by lifting a total of 1,030 pounds at the state meet last week.

Caddo Football Coach Jeremy Proctor said the junior member of the Bruins football team “has lots of potential to win it again next year.” McKimmy’s first-place status came in the 145-pound class for all Oklahoma small schools (class C to 2A).

“All of these guys work very hard at this sport. It takes time, sacrifice and dedication to do this sport and do well,” Proctor said. “It coincides with football because your players are your lifters, and when they are getting stronger your team gets stronger. Powerlifting is a growing sport given that the Crossfit community does a lot of Olympic lifting. We actually invite Crossfit instructor Colby Oller from Crossfit Durant to come into our weight room and go over some techniques with our lifters. He does a super job helping correct some of their techniques.”

The Bruins took three competitors to the meet in McLoud. Eric Favors, a senior, placed sixth in the 132-pound class; Virgle Mincher, junior, didn’t place in the 220-pound class but received high praise from his coaches.
