Area firefighters responded to several fires Wednesday, some of which were controlled burns and another that became out of control and spread to a structure.

According to a police dispatch log, there were many “controlled burns” held Thursday.

Volunteer firefighters were dispatched at 1:22 p.m. to 32 E. Sycamore St. in Lakewood Ranchettes to a fire that started out as a controlled burn and then caught a house on fire which quickly became fully engulfed.

Durant firefighters responded at 9:37 p.m. to a fire at 1325 S. Highway 78 that was first reported to be a brush fire and while firefighters were en route, firefighters were told it was a structure fire. Upon arrival, however, they learned it was a large pile of rubbish on fire and there were not structures involved. Firefighters allowed the fire to burn down before extinguishing it.

Firefighters responded to another rubbish fire on West Highway 70 behind the Old Tates Bros. Manufacturing Company. That fire was also a controlled burn and according to the fire department, the people there did not contact the communications center to notify authorities of the burn.

Anyone planning a controlled burn in the county should call the Durant Police Department at 924-3737 so authorities will be aware of the planned burning.

Firefighters also responded at 8:09 p.m. to Cubley Road in Durant to investigate a smoke odor. There were several brush pile fires in the area all of which appeared to be controlled burns.
