DURANT — Police arrested a man early this morning for suspicion of robbery after he allegedly entered a home swinging a piece of lumber and demanding his money, according to Durant Police.
Officers were dispatched at 1:53 to a house in the 1100 block of West Louisiana Street after receiving a call from a juvenile who had locked herself in a bathroom following a burglary.
When police arrived, a male and female at the home said there were five people who had left in a white car. An officer stopped a vehicle a short time later on Arkansas Street.
One of the persons was identified as the suspect, according to police. The home occupants said that the man kicked open the door and yelled about stolen money. Others also entered the home, and the first suspect, armed with a 2X4, began hitting doors inside the residence and yelling, “Give me my money.”
Police spoke with a passenger inside the vehicle that had been stopped and he disclosed that the man with the board said he had been robbed and wanted to go back and get his money.
Police found a 2X4 in the 1100 block of West Texas Street and the suspect said he carried it for self defense. He was booked into jail for suspicion of first-degree robbery. The district attorney’s office will be reviewing the report to determine charges.
In other crimes, a Milburn man accused of paralyzing a man by running over him during a fight at a bar parking lot pleaded no contest to an assault charge.
Nicholas James Blakemore, 27, was sentenced to three years in prison, plus an additional seven years suspended after he pleaded no contest this week to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and leaving the scene of an injury accident.
According to Durant Police, Blakemore ran over Todd Raymond Curley and dragged him 200 feet after a September 2007 altercation in the parking lot of Cheyenne’s Club on West Main Street.
Curley suffered three compound fractures to his legs, a shattered spine that caused paralysis from the waist down, a punctured left lung, skull fracture and half of his right ear was torn off, court papers state. Also, the skin was torn off his back.
Blakemore was charged in 2008, following completion of the investigation by the police department’s criminal investigation division. An affidavit states that Jordan Ward went to the bar with the victim. Ward and Blakemore got into an argument and after the nightclub closed, Blakemore drove up to him and a fight began.
Trent Carroll, identified as a passenger in the truck, told police that several people were beating on the truck while they where trying to leave. Carroll told police that Blakemore drove away “very fast.”
Tishomingo Police arrested Blakemore later that morning for public intoxication. He denied being at the nightclub, according to police. The affidavit states that blood, skin and bits of clothing were found underneath the truck.
