DURANT — The Victory Life Academy Eagles broke out the ‘ole spanking stick on the Canadian Cougars Friday night as the Eagles marinated the Cougars 70-44.

Most of the scoring occurred in the first half as the Eagles enjoyed a 50-14 led.

“We just put it to them, man. We ran the ball really well and threw the ball well,” said VLA coach Tim Wigington. “We had a lot of misdirection stuff that worked against them. Being a first-year team we took advantage of that.”

Wigington is referring to the fact that it was Canadian’s first time to field a football team. The Cougars weren’t assigned a district, but managed to help Victory Life fill an open schedule spot.

It was also good timing for the return of running back Shelby Stiles who had missed several games with an injury.

In the first half, Stiles and Jacob Nichols combined for six touchdowns that gave the Eagles their enormous 36-point lead.

VLA scored 20 first-quarter points for a 20-6 lead after two touchdown runs by Stiles bookended a touchdown run by Jake Nichols. VLA outscored Canadian 30-8 in the second quarter after three touchdowns by Nichols and one by Jacob Dupree.

“We had some deep balls and long running plays and our defense really did a good job,” said Wigington. “We scored almost on every drive.”

The Cougars tried to claw themselves back into the game and found respect in its ground game and scored 30 points in the second half.

“In the second half we began to sub in players a bit and they caught up to us because they began to run the ball on us up the middle and on the outside on some of our starters.”

Preston Cooper and Dayton Booth added touchdowns in the third quarter and Dupree scored the final touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles will host Cement on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
