Preliminary hearings on two murder cases, including one of a man charged with killing a child, have been postponed.

Jason Belew, 34, was scheduled for a preliminary hearing today on a first-degree murder charge for the October strangulation death of Dakota Hughes, 11.

Earlier this month, Bryan County District Attorney Emily Redman filed papers asking that the hearing be delayed because her office does not have an autopsy report or prosecutorial or lab results from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

Belew’s preliminary hearing is now scheduled for March 22.

Phillip Austin Yelvington, 34, charged in July with the stabbing death of Jason Booker, 25, had a preliminary hearing set Wednesday. It was delayed until April 5 because the defense attorney was not available.

Belew was arrested after authorities investigated the death of Hughes, who authorities said was murdered by Belew at her aunt’s Cartwright home.

Investigators said the girl was beaten and raped, and the State Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death was likely caused by strangulation.

The girl had been staying at Debbie Hughes’ home, who lived next door to the father. Hughes said she had been drinking with Belew and that she passed out, according to an affidavit by Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Agent David Houston.

She said that after she woke up, she found Dakota’s body. Authorities said Belew used Debbie’s phone to call for a ride and he was arrested the next day in Sherman. He remains in jail and his being held without bond.

Yelvington is accused of stabbing Booker to death July 8 at Booker’s Lynnwood Drive home. According to Durant Police, Booker dialed 911 and said he had been stabbed. Booker’s wife ran next door and called police.

Booker was dead when police and medical personnel arrived. Yelvington was arrested following an investigation. When questioned by Durant Police Capt. Ben Veenstra, Yelvington, who lived next door, said he was possessed by demons and entered the victim’s home while in a trance, the affidavit states. He said Booker jumped out of bed and he stabbed him.

Yelvington is being held without bail.
