DURANT — A teenager police said was shot while burglarizing a home entered a no-contest plea to a first-degree burglary charge.

Brandon Michael Thoren, 18, will be sentenced Sept. 21 in accordance with the delayed sentencing program for young adults, according to a recent court report. He was taken to jail.

Thoren was charged Jan. 7 following a police investigation into the shooting of a burglary suspect at a home in the 1000 block of North Third Avenue.

According to Durant Police, Chad Sitton, the homeowner, saw a person later identified as Thoren enter the home from the garage area. Sitton told police that the intruder moved his right hand toward a pocket and due to concern he might have a weapon, Sitton shot the suspect one time.

The intruder fled on foot but was later taken to the local hospital and then flown to a Texas hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound. He was released after treatment and police said no vital organs were hit.

Thoren was 17 at the time of the crime, and was charged as an adult.

No charges were filed against Sitton, and under the state’s “Make my day” law, homeowners can use deadly force if they feel threatened by an intruder.

In other crime news, James Wesley Blackwell told Deputy Brian Carr last week that someone stole four gates from his property near Blue on Old Highway 70. The gates are orange colored and four-feet-by-12-feet in length.

Saturday afternoon, one person was taken to the hospital after a rollover crash on Highway 69/75 near the Love’s Truck Stop in Colbert. The accident stopped up traffic in the north-and-southbound-lanes until authorities cleared the scene. Additional details were not available at press time Saturday.
