NORMAN — At first, it became about getting him a few at-bats, then about getting him into the lineup. Because every outing became more impressive, Max White became a full-time starter in left field for the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Durant freshman’s season is still going with the Sooners being one of 16 remaining teams to advance to a Super Regional. As for individual achievement, White received high honors this week as Collegiate Baseball Newspaper announced him to the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American team.

White managed to stand out despite a potent offensive lineup for the Sooners. To date, he’s hit .307 with 14 home runs — good for second on the team and fourth in the Big 12. White has played in 56 games, making 46 starts. He’s had a hit in 25 of his last 33 games.

“Max has put together a stellar campaign to this point in the season,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “Some of his most impressive numbers lie in Big 12 play. He has a bright future at the University of Oklahoma.”

Within Big 12 play White was tied at the top with nine home runs, but did it in the fewest amount of Big 12 games played at 24. He was also sixth in conference play in run production with 28 RBIs. His .608 slugging percentage ranks eighth in the Big 12.

OU (47-15) will continue to stay on the road to Omaha via Charlottesville. They face No. 1 Virginia (30-12) in a best of three series. The first game, beginning 2 p.m. Central time Saturday, will be on ESPNU. Sunday’s game, with a 3 p.m. CDT start time, is on ESPN.
