More than 100 runners will be participating in the 5K and 10K Colton’s Main Street Run in memory of 10-year old Colton Sherrill, son of Trace and Dena Sherrill. The young athlete passed away in 2008 from an unknown heart defect while playing basketball. Colton loved all sports and enjoyed volunteering for Durant Main Street events.
“I couldn’t ask for better events to help me start my new position as program manager of Durant Main Street,” said Beverly Hemphill. “Durant Main Street is honored for the privilege of memorializing one of its youngest volunteers by sponsoring Colton’s Main Street Run which will benefit our community in a variety of ways.”
Funds are targeted for community projects, scholarships to local students, and the purchase of Automatic External Defibrillators for sporting venues and local schools as well as bleachers for “Colton’s Field” at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex. This year three local students were awarded scholarships through the Colton Sherrill Memorial Scholarship Fund.
All races start at 9:00 a.m. at Market Square, 1st and Evergreen in Durant. Steve Kime, “Oklahoma’s Forrest Gump,” will welcome runners and officially open the race.
Pre-registrations are $20 per runner. For the one-mile fun run and members of School Cross Country Teams, the registration is $10 per participants. Pre-registration deadline is midnight, Oct. 19. A $5 late fee will be applied after the deadline and registrations will be taken on race day.
Entry form, registration, corporate sponsor form, and all specifics are on line at www.coltonsrun.com.
Presenting sponsor Cardinal Glass is inviting area businesses and organizations to become a sponsor and participate in the race.
“This is a big two-in-one event day in the community,” Hemphill said. “After Colton’s Main Street Run, there’s plenty of time for everyone to enjoy the Wild Hog Cook-Off at the Choctaw Event Center and the Southeastern vs. East Central Football game.” All runners will receive two free tickets to the game scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
