Last week the Durant Lions (1-4) suffered a tough district loss to the hands Tulsa Bishop Kelley Comets. Now, the Lions look to bounce back this week against another district foe in undefeated Tulsa Memorial Chargers (5-0).
The Charges have a potent offense that has posted 189 points and a defense that has allowed only 86 points through five weeks.
“They have great athletics, pretty well coach. They are 5-0 for a reason, they hung 77 points on Shawnee and that’s saying something.” said head coach Bryon Cordell.
The Chargers offense has one thing and most coaches covet, “Speed, speed, speed.” said Cordell. “You just match up the best you can and try to contain them and don’t let them explode.”
The Charges will keep the Lions on their toes and will have to execute in all parts of the game. And against this defense the Lions running game will have to run it down the Comets throat.
“You can’t run sideways against them, we got to get north and south and go right at them.” said Cordell.
But it’s not all about X’s and O’s. The Lions will have to forget about last week and mentally bounce back to beat the Chargers.
“Last Friday night was one of the most disappointing games that I have been apart of in a long time. It’s not the fact that we loss, but how we loss.” said Cordell, ” Give credit to Bishop Kelley, but we made to many mistakes and that’s what disappointing about it. We just didn’t get it done.”
There is one way to elimate mistakes and that’s practice. “We have had a great week of practice, the best all year.” said Cordell. “We had a little welcome to the jungle on Monday. The team’s attitude has been outstanding and their work ethic has been great. I can’t say how proud I am of the way they have responded.”
To be the best is to beat the best and the Lions will face a very good team in the Chargers.
“This is going to be a great challenge for us, but with great challenge come great opportunity.” said Cordell.
Kick-off time will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Tulsa Memorial.
