The Durant Lions will play it’s last home game of the season this Thursday night in district play against Shawnee Wolves at 7:30 p.m. at Paul Laird Field on Senior Night.

Shawnee sports a 2-5 overall record and 1-3 in district and the Lions are 1-6 overall and is also 1-3 in district.

Both teams are fighting for their playoff lives in this pivotal district game.

The Lions Dakota Diessner has been on fire in last two games, scoring 4 TD’s and rushing for 203 yards. The Lions hope he can keep pace and tear through the Wolves defense this Thursday night.

“He has been playing well. He’s healthy. He sprained one ankle at the beginning of the year and the other ankle in the second game, and hurt his knee.” said Lion head coach Byron Cordell, “He is finally healthy and been playing really well.”

Kooper Cavender has been a good chance of pace in the back field for the Lions. Last week he rushed for 31 yards on 4 carries and averaged 7.8 yards per carry.

“Kooper is one of the most improved players on the team. He has worked hard and every week he has been getting a lot more time,” said Cordell, “And he will be getting a lot more time this week.”

The Wolves offense will have to keep an eye out for Will Engle. Engle was injured early on in the year and is now back, last week showed why the Lions have missed him on defense.

Last week against McAlester, Engle stop plays in the back field, got an INT and led the team with 7 tackles.

“He is playing really good on defense. He is one of the best young men on the team, I’m not talking about just being a player, he is one of the best young men we got.” said Cordell, “He is a good leader and leads by example.”

The Lions will have to watch the Wolves skill players very closely as the combination of their QB and WR can prove to be a powerful duo.

“They got some good skill kids. Their WR is good, their QB is good and some real good running backs.” said Cordell, “They are 2-5, but they teams they have played have a record of 32-3.”

This game is the first of last three district games that the Lions must win in order to get into the playoffs.

“We gotta win out.” said Cordell.

Lion injures: Alex Brooks is out for the year, Cooper Webb could also be done for the year, Gabe Louis had an MRI on his shoulder, Dylan Stevens has a knee injury.
