Tuesday evening, Calera School’s Leadership organizations held a political debate for not only the State representative seat but the open sheriff position.
The candidates for both State Representative for district 21 and candidates for Bryan County Sheriff took turns answering questions asked by students at Calera High School.
A panel of eight students from various leadership organizations such as FFA, FCCLA and Student Council delivered the questions to the candidates.
Each candidate that was asked a question was allotted a two-minute response the opposing candidate was then allotted a one- minute response followed by a one minute response by the original candidate.
In opening, State Representative Dustin Roberts, a Republican, said that the Southeastern portion of Oklahoma is one of the greatest parts of the state.
“I’m going to go back and fight for Bryan County,” said Roberts. He said that he does not want to only create job growth but would rather create career growth as he spoke about the importance of stable careers in the area.
Durant Mayor Jerry Tomlinson, a Democrat, who is seeking the office held by Roberts, said he has the experience needed for the state representative seat.
“My resume is one of experience, both in life and in business,” said Tomlinson. “I want to take that experience to the capital.”
Candidate for Sheriff John Wyatt, a Republican, spoke of his years in the Navy during his opening statement. He noted that he had helped to run a jail for which he received naval accommodations.
He also spoke of his many years as the Captain of the Durant Police Reserves.
Candidate for Sheriff Ken Golden, a Democrat, spoke of his time in the National Guard and his years working at the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office.
Golden is currently undersheriff to Sheriff Bill Sturch.
