Lena Burkhalter Anderson Smith “Grannie” was born on Saturday, April 25, 1936 in Durant, Oklahoma to Lee Alvin and Viola Riter Burkhalter and passed from this life on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 in Denison, Texas at the age of 76.

Lena attended Russell High School in Durant and has lived the majority of her life in Bryan County. She worked for Texas Instruments, Calera Nutrition, Bryan County Youth Shelter and Choctaw Casinos. She was a member of the Calera Methodist Church and she enjoyed going to watch ballgames in Colbert and spending time with family and friends especially her grandchildren.

Lena was preceded in death by her parents; father of her children Clifton “Spud” Anderson; brothers Haynie, Buck, Billy, Charles and Cochran Burkhalter; sister Inez Pena and special friend Merlene Carbaugh.

Lena is survived by her children Robert Anderson of Calera, Danny Anderson of Calera, Galena Papoi of Durant, Kerry Bryant of Boswell and Lanette Anderson of Calera; brother Keiller Burkhalter and wife Linda of Calera; sisters Marion Inell Risner of Blue and Elizabeth Maxey and husband Doyle of Calera; 12 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and numerous other family and friends.

Services to celebrate Lena’s life will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the Colbert High School Auditorium. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery with Brian Cummins, Lance Britt, Timothy McCollom, Joshua Reynolds, Benny Thompson and Corey Prentice serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be her nephews. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home on Thursday, November 29, 2012 from 6-8 PM.
