The SE Campus Book Store hosted a book signing for Horace Robinson’s grammar handbook, “Proper Form, Pure and Simple” on Thursday Nov. 29.
The book hit shelves in December of 2011. So far, it is only a required text in Robinson’s own classroom.
Robinson teaches multiple sections of both ENG 4973 and COMM 4973 at Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
Robinson is also the Director of the Center for Rhetoric and Professional Development at the college which he said is “a complement to the already existing curriculum of SOSU.”
Robinson taught Freshmen English for seven years. During this time he saw that many of his students struggled with proper form.
He said that many students did not have a procedure to help them choose the correct pronoun form or the correct verb tense.
Student would often rely on sound to determine what they felt was correct. “Sound is a fickle guide,” said Robinson.
Robinson said his book employs a “stem to stern” approach in presenting proper form. “It begins at the very beginning and does not assume upon the reader’s knowledge of the subject. It deals with issues one-step-at-a time,” said Robinson.
Robinson said that the book may not cover every issue that may arise but it “will allow learners of all ages to leave guesswork and mind games behind and to put the language together with skill and confidence.”
Robinson reported that the book store was out of copies of “Proper Form, Pure and Simple” within 30 minutes of the book signing on Thursday.
“My dream for this little missile is that it will find its way to the desks of professionals who need a quick, ready reference to proper form, and into the backpacks of high school and college students who need a simple, but comprehensive treatment of this vital element of their education,” said Robinson.
