SILO – The Rebels big three combined for 43 points to overpower Springer and capture their first tournament trophy of the basketball season with a 59-47 win on Saturday.
Lance House took home the most valuable player honors by leading the team with 16 hard-fought points. Leonard Sandler came up with 14 big points and Kendall Shives added 13 as Silo Coach Dax Simon tinkered with a variety of lineups against the Cardinals.
“Springer played pretty well, we’ve got to give them credit,” Simon said. “We struggled a bit offensively, and we need to do a better job of finishing around the rim. But we had a lot of good fans come out and support us. We’re glad to come out and win our own tournament.”
The undefeated Rebels premiered at No. 20 in last week’s Class 2A rankings and now sport a 9-0 record after the tournament.
Defense looked to be the rule in the first half, as the Cards and Rebs battled to a 6-6 tie after one period of play. Springer went up by five before Shives’s three-point play tied the game at 19 just before the half.
Shives continued to shine in the second half, working the boards and coming up with five points to keep pace with the hot-shooting Cardinals. An 8-0 Silo run started on a long pass from Sandler to House for two followed by a Kannon Dry basket. Dry finished with six.
Silo shot 9-for-10 from the charity stripe in the third to help them take a 38-32 lead into the final eight minutes. The lead reached 10 before Sandler scored five points in as many seconds to push ahead 47-32. The Rebels outscored Springer 21-15 in the fourth.
The Rebels host a pair of huge home games this week, both opponents who had strong showings in last week’s Madill Winter Classic. Kingston visits on Tuesday and Class A No. 10 Boswell will be in town on Friday.
Boys Third Place: Achille 60 Caney 46
Austin Beene scored his season average of 29 points and Bradley McKnight added 16 with four trifectas as the Achille Eagles defeated Caney 60-46 at the Silo Tournament on Saturday.
Beene and McKnight also collaborated in one of the best team plays of the tournament. A Beene outlet to Lane Manry was tapped ahead to McKnight in the paint who passed it backwards behind the defender and back to Manry for the easy layup and a 12-point second-half lead.
Manry and Derick Baker added six for the Eagles (5-6). They host Caddo on Tuesday.
Boys consolation: Victory Life Academy 60 Silo JV 53
Josh English scored 25 and Ethan Hollowell added 14 as the VLA Eagles edged the JV Rebels in the down-bracket game of the Silo Tournament on Saturday.
Marcus Bowens and Trenton Long shared scoring duties with 14 apiece for Silo JV. Lucas Long had 11, TC Crozier added six, Landon Weaver and Drake Shives scored three each and Justin Baxter had two.
For the Eagles, Zach Hestily added 12, Austin Waterman had five and Chase Stampley was held to four.
