The Durant Lady Lions came home with some bling, winning 5th place at Ardmore’s 30th Annual Holiday Basketball Festival on Friday and Saturday. The Lady Lions loss in the first round to Allen Lady Eagles 67-41. Then they bounced back and beat Putnam City West Lady Patriots 50-43, and on Saturday they beat Burleson Centennial Lady Spartans to the tune of 45-38.
Friday Game One:
In game one against Allen Lady Eagles, the Lady Lions had turnover problems with some cold shooting that led to a 67-41 first round loss.
The Lady Lions had to knock off some of the Holiday rust. In the first period, the Lady Eagles outscored Durant 19-8 as the Lady Lions gave up scoring opportunities to turnovers.
Durant came alive in the second period scoring 15 points, but Allen matched every point and Durant trailed 34-23 heading into halftime.
In the third period the Lady Lions struggled and was outscored 14-7 and fell futher behind as the Lady Eagles led 49-30.
Allen came out hot, beginning with the fourth period with a 14-2 run and finished off the Lady Lions 67-41.
The Lady Lions leading scorers: Rheagan Jones 12 points, Sierra Wilhite 10 points, Kenzi Clapp 8 points, Morgan Steve 4 points, Shelbi Barrett and Katie Caraway 2 points apiece.
Friday Game Two:
The Lady Lions regrouped against Putnam City West Lady Patriots in round two, beating the Lady Patriots, 50-43.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the first quarter as three lead changes occurred. The first period began with a 6-0 run by the Lady Lions, led by Sierra Wilhite 4 points and Shelbi Barrett kknocked down both of her free throws.
Then the Lady Patriots tied the game with it’s own 6-0 run. As the game rolled on, both teams traded buckets and the Lady Lions came out on top with a 18-15 lead heading into the second frame.
Midway through the second period, the Lady Lions were holding onto a slim 22-18 lead. Then Lady Lions Kenzi Clapp came off the bench and brought high energy. She went the free throw line three times and scored 4 points as the Putnam mustard only 2 points in the that span. Durant would finish the period with a 6-3 run, thanks to Morgan Steve’s buzzer beater shot, Rheagan Jones and Katie Caraway both had 2 points apiece. Durant headed into the locker room with a 32-23 lead.
Both teams matched buckets in the third period. Durant and Putnam ended the period with 8 points and the Lions kept their lead, 40-31.
Putman gave the Lady Lions a scare as they came with in 4 points of Durant. Despite being outscored 12-10, the Lady Lions made buckets when needed and beat the Lady Patriots 50-43 and moved on to Saturday’s final game for 5th place.
Saturday Game Three:
Everything went right for the the Lady Lions as beat the Burleson Centennial Lady Spartans for the 5th place trophy, 45-38.
The Lady Spartans were on the heels of the Lady Lions for three quarters and then pulled away in the fourth period.
Burleson Centennial came out with the hot hand went on a 7-2 run to begin the game. Then Lady Lions came back with a 7-0 run to end the period a took a 9-7 lead into the second period.
It was push in the second period as both teams scored 8 points and the Lady Lions held on to a 17-15 lead into halftime.
With the score 23-18 midway through the third period in favor of Durant, the Lady Spartans took the lead 24-23. With 1:16 left in the period the Lady Lions came back and captured the lead, 28-27. Then with time running out Sierra Wilhite hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer and gave Durant led 32-28.
In the fourth period the game was tied 36-36 with 2:26 remaining in the game. Then the Lady Lions went on a 9-2 run for the win and the trophy.
