Pamela Porter has been named Photographer of the Month for January, by the Friends of Hagerman.
Porter says she became interested in photography while attending Rogers State College, Claremore, Oklahoma. Her interest has increased in the last few years and she has been slowly turning her hobby into a part-time portrait photography business.
A virtual album of twelve photos taken at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge is featured on the Friends website this month, friendsofhagerman.com.
A Colbert, Oklahoma, resident, Pamela has been the lead vocalist for the popular area band Rocky and the Bullwinkles for 11 years. She had visited Hagerman in the past but recently returned and ignited two new passions - nature photography and bird watching. Now she tries to visit weekly, especially during migrations and calls Hagerman her favorite place to go.
“I love the peace and quiet and all the beauty that I had forgotten existed in the world…it has taught me …that every living thing has a purpose, to slow down and pay attention to the detail of ALL the beautiful things in this world,” she said.
Her favorite subjects at the Refuge are the Great Blue Heron, followed by American White Pelicans and the Snow Geese migration. Porter uses a Nikon D3000 with a manual sigma 70-300 mm Macro lens at the Refuge.
She hopes to become a full time photographer and to expand professionally to nature photography.
Hagerman’s 11,000 acre wildlife habitat offers a myriad of photo opportunities; programs for photographers include the Nature Photography Club, which will be meeting at 12:30 pm, January 12, at the Refuge, small group photo safaris, and an annual photo contest.
Two professionally-led nature photography workshops and two photo field trips will be offered in May at BirdFest Texoma. The Refuge is located at 6465 Refuge Road, Sherman, Texas. For more information email fohphotoclub@gmail.com or see the Friends website.
