HUGO - Durant Lions basketballers started on a three game road swing that began on Friday night against the Hugo Buffs. The Lady Lions were up-and-down in the game and never found an on-going rhythm as the Lady Buffs won 62-47.

In the boys game, the Lions trailed 28-24 at the half and grabbed a 9 point lead at the end of third period, but the Lions let the lead slip through their fingers in the fourth and loss 71-56 to Hugo.

Boys:

The Lions had to fight to get back into the game after a lack luster seven point first period. Hugo had a 15-7 edge after the first period.

Then the Lions clawed it’s way back into game in second period. Durant began the period with a 9-to-6 run and later with an 8-to-6 run and freshman Lion Tyler Stovall dropped two 3-pointers in the run and the Lions trailed 28-24 at the half. Will Engle, Cooper Webb, Cole Hughes and Jalen Harries all pitched in 2 points.

The Lions would catch fire in the third period and outscored the Buffs in quarter, 21-8 and grabbed a 45-36 lead. Hughes had a 3-point bucket and scored 9 points, of his 14 total points, in the period. But momentum comes and it can goes.

The collapse began in the beginning minutes of the final frame. The Buffs would bust out a 10-to-5 run that took 3 minutes of the clock and the Lions lead was cut to, 50-46. Then from the 5 minute mark on the Buffs went on a blistering run of 25-to-6 to close out the game.

“We just made too many mistakes in the fourth quarter. We can’t mistakes like that against a good ball team and win.” said coach Jason Wilkerson. “We got to finish, there is no reason for us not to win that ballgame.”

Girls:

It was a roller coaster ride for the Lady Lions in it’s game against the Lady Buffs. The Lady Lions was cold from the field and scored only 7 points, but the Lady Buffs struggled too and the Lady Lions were still in it and trailed, 12-7.

Lady Lion Morgan Steven’s 11 points and Alex Richards’ 8 points helped to keep the game close in the second period. The Lady Buffs survived Durant’s surge and led 32-29 at the half.

The third was a fatal period for the Lady Lions. Durant once again went cold from the field and managed only 5 points in the period. The Lady Buffs would score 15 unanswered points in the period and the lead grew to 53-34.

The Lady Lions tried to mount a come back in the fourth period and outscored Hugo 13-to-10, but the game was too far gone.

“It’s the same story I’ve been saying all year. It’s a roller coaster ride, we can only put two quarters together out of four. Our first quarter was bad, we only scored 7 points, the second quarter we score 22 points, the third quarter we scored 5 points and in the fourth quarter we scored 13 points.” said head coach Chad Rumer, “I can’t find the answer and that’s my fault. Our biggest thing is that we can’t put four quarters together.”
