Fort Washita having annual rendezvous

The Fort Washita Rendezvous bgan Wednesday and it continues from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday.

The rendezvous showcases historic life at Fort Washita.

This year the event will feature trappers, traders, mountain men demonstrators, stickball, Chickasaw Stomp Dancers and more.

Fort Washita was built in 1842 and served as a former United States military post.

The mission of Fort Washita was to protect the Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes from the Plains Indians and was abandoned after the Civil War in 1865.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Fort Washita has become a popular point of interest for visitors and tour groups of all sizes to journey into the past through informational exhibits, Civil War reenactments, storytelling and more.

Fort Washita is located at 3348 Highway 199.
