April showers brought high school scholars and guest speakers to Durant Kiwanis noon meetings instead of May flowers. Kiwanis Durant High School Senior of the Month for April is Ariel Riley, daughter of Christine Armstrong.

J127 Ministry’s recent secondannual Journey with J Dinner topped the one the year before in the amount of money raised. Last year’s banquet raised $51,000 and this year, $69,000 was raised to help fund J127’s transitional home for young women who have aged out of the foster care system.

An update on construction of the Durant High School agricultural education building was presented during a recent meeting of the Durant Board of Education. According to a report by Claycomb Associates, Architects, the project has been going well although there have been delays because of the rain and the number of rocks uncovered at the construction site.

May 27 Silo Restland Cemetery Association is having a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27 to honor veterans interred at the cemetery.

TVSHKA HOMMA – Members of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma will come together in remembrance of the Trail of Tears and to honor their ancestors who made the journey. The 2024 Trail of Tears Memorial Walk will be held at the historic Choctaw Capitol Grounds at Tvshka Homma on Saturday, May 18.

The Tulsa State Fair Ringmasters have awarded a $2,000 scholarship to Braden Hamilton of Durant. Hamilton has exhibited great character, work ethic and community involvement; these attributes are the qualities necessary to achieve success and further his educational career.

Tribal members, government officials, associates, friends and family gathered Friday, April 26, to celebrate Chief Gary Batton’s 10 years of service as Chief of the Choctaw Nation. Batton was sworn into office on April 28, 2014, as the 47th Chief of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
