The City of Durant is pleased to announce its recent employee spotlight.

Fire Chief Jeff Langford has worked for the City of Durant for 26 years. Langford began his career in the fire service with the Durant Fire Department, working his way up to the chief position. “I was working construction with two guys that worked at the Denison Fire Department,” said Langford. “They would tell me stories about the job, which piqued my interest. The next time the Durant Fire Department had a tryout, I gave it a shot, and here I am today.”

Like most other firefighters, Langford started his career eager to fight structure fires and respond to car wrecks.

“Hopefully, to help someone that was having a really bad day,” he said.

His passion for helping others has continued to grow over the last two decades.

“The fire service is a job that gives each person in it a sense of purpose, a challenge to always do your best when called upon,” Langford said. “As I have moved into the administration side of the job, I take pride in making sure the members of our department have the equipment and training required for them to do their job as best they can. Watching them save lives and property brings me pride and enjoyment.”

Under Chief Langford’s leadership, the Durant Fire Department remains fully staffed, but he encourages anyone interested in a career in firefighting to take the leap.

“The fire service is a high-risk, high-reward type of work,” said Langford. “It is the best job in the world, but it can take a toll on your body, both physically and emotionally, and it can be hard on your family. Just make sure that is truly something you want before signing up.”

In his time away from work, Chief Langford enjoys spending time with his wife, kids and grandkids, and being outdoors, away from crowds.
