Firefighters put out house, shed fires

Firefighters were dispatched at 11:23 a.m. Dec. 17 to a structure fire at 625 S. First Ave. and upon arrival, they saw a small shed in the backyard on fire.

Firefighters entered the shed and put out the fire. According to the report, firefighters were told that someone had been staying in the shed. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

The fire department responded to a rollover crash at 12:40 a.m. at 4289 Armstrong Rd. According to a DFD report, an SUV had rolled onto its side and a woman in and out of consciousness was in the front seat.

Firefighters cut the roof off the vehicle and the woman was taken by Bryan County EMS to the Durant High School parking lot where she flown from the scene by a medical helicopter.

Firefighters were dispatched at 4:33 p.m. to 32 Albert Pike Road where a home was full of smoke. Everyone was out of the house when firefighters arrived and one of the people on the scene said they attempted to start a fire in the fire place when smoke began filling the house.

Firefighters went into the attic and discovered that an air-conditioning unit was between them and the fire. A firefighter cut a hole in the ceiling on the back patio and removed sheet rock to reach the fire and extinguish it.

The homeowner told firefighters she bought the house about two months ago and this was the first time she used the propane gas insert in the fireplace.

In other news, medical personnel were dispatched at 3:38 p.m. Dec. 15 to Chickasaw Hall at Southeastern where there was an unresponsive person. The person, who was identified by the university as a student, was taken to AllianceHealth and pronounced deceased.

The university said in a statement that the incident was under investigation by Southeastern Police and local authorities. Foul play was not suspected.

“The university asks for privacy for the student’s family, but encourages thoughts and prayers from the extended Southeastern family,” the university said, in a news release.
