The April meeting of Bryan County Retired Educators featured Legislative Day. President Jerrie Goforth welcomed Oklahoma State Senator David Bullard and Oklahoma State Representative Cody Maynard. Mrs. Crystal Maynard accompanied Rep. Maynard as a special guest.

My first time voting was in the 1960 Kennedy/Nixon election. I voted straight Republican. The Republicans’ reported policies of lower taxes, limited government, and fiscal responsibility sounded appealing. This was my consistent voting pattern, with only two exceptions during the next three decades.

Southeastern Oklahoma State University held its 2024 spring commencement ceremonies Friday and Saturday at Bloomer Sullivan Arena. The university said the class was the largest graduating class in Southeastern’s history, with 823 students graduating that included 349 baccalaureate degrees, 442 graduate degrees and 32 certifi cate recipients.

Plans are in the works to turn the former Plaza movie theater into the centerpiece for downtown Durant. The old movie theater on North Third Avenue currently houses the District Attorney’s Office and county commissioners voted in a recent meeting to donate it to Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

The Kiwanis Club of Durant had its 42nd annual Durant Community Prayer Breakfast May 2 at Durant First United Methodist Church. The event is in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer.

A woman was hit by a train Monday evening and an elevator caught fire in the Southeastern Administration Building Tuesday morning. Durant firefighters were dispatched at 5:48 p.m.

A retirement reception for Duane and Melanie Merideth was well attended May 1 at Durant High School. Numerous current and former educators stopped by to wish the Merideths well in their retirement.
