Both Durant High School girls and boys soccer teams ran into a buzz saw in their final home contests of the season last week, dropping both decisions to powerhouse Santa Fe South from Oklahoma City.

The Lady Lions got off to an early lead before suffering a 4-2 defeat while the Lions were on the defensive throughout in a 7-0 setback.

Durant’s girls fell to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in District 5A-1 play while the boys slipped to 6-3 and 2-2 as well in the league standings.

Each team will likely need two wins in its final three district road games at Noble, Duncan and Elgin to punch its Class 5A playoff ticket. Despite holding possession most of the game, the Lady Lions fell to a late scoring barrage.

Karah Boydstun stayed on the aggression offensively throughout the first half and punched through the only goal to give Durant a 1-0 edge heading into the half.

The visitors got a goal early in the second half to tie the game before Boydstun got fouled on a drive into the box and was able to put away a penalty kick for a 2-1 Lady Lion lead in the upset bid midway through the second half.

A few defensive miscues down the stretch however proved costly as Santa Fe South knotted the score and added two more goals in the final 20 minutes.

Boydstun scored on two of her nine shots on goal. J.J. Patten added five shots on goal, Hailey Ogilby had three, Katelyn Ortiz notched two with Kamryn White and Katelyn Mauck notching one apiece.

Alex Martinez finished with eight saves in goal for Durant.

“We played a phenomenal game much of the night against an outstanding opponent,” said girls head coach Katie Williams. “We just made a few late mistakes that cost us.”

Facing the defending state champs, the Lions found the scoring opportunities extremely limited against the Oklahoma City area foe.

Santa Fe South kept the offensive pressure on throughout as Hunter Wingfield notched 12 saves in addition to allowing the seven opposing goals in a plethora of chances.

“They are definitely the best team we have played this season,” head coach John Wilmoth said of Santa Fe South. “We’re going to need to put that one behind us and focus on winning at least two of these final three to have a chance at the playoffs.”
