School record falls as DHS track competes well

Durant’s Lady Lion track and field team claimed top honors in their own annual meet last week as well as placing fifth in the rugged Ardmore Invitational.

The boys’ squad, meanwhile, took third place in their Durant Invitational and ended up fourth in the team standings at Ardmore.

Both teams will have one more regular season meet on Friday at Duncan to prepare for the upcoming regionals.

In the Durant Track Meet, the Lady Lions were spurred by Amira Woods’ first place mark of 25.24 seconds in the 200 meters and a 5 foot, 6 inches long jump title leap from Laila Ahmed. Ahmed was also second in the 100 hurdles at 17.02 seconds.

The 800-meter relay unit of Iyana Wilson, Xakayla Cox, Kaitlen Rush and Woods took top honors with a time of 1:47.10. The same group was second in the sprint relay in 51.36 seconds.

Durant’s 1600 relay foursome of Laynee Emert, Woods, Rush and Avery Sager finished third by posting a mark of 4:19.81. Sager chipped in a personal best time of 2:30.13 while placing second in the 800 meters and was also third in the 1600 at 5:45.62.

Sheraya Struble added a personal best mark of 98 feet, 3 inches in claiming third in the discus.

On the boys’ side, Kaydon Mimms broke the school record in the 110 hurdles with a personal best time of 14.89 seconds to win the 110 hurdles. He also notched a personal best mark of 22.82 seconds in winning the 200 meters with runner-up marks of 11.4 seconds in the 100 meters and 40.2 seconds in the 300 hurdles.

Aiden Sager cruised to the 800-meter title in 2:02.43 with Tashaun Williams wrapping up third in the long jump with a personal record of 19 feet, 1 inch.

The Lion grouping of Justin Smith, Eric Williams, Owen Madison and Damien Almos added a third place time of 46.48 seconds in the sprint relay.

Leading the charge on the girls’ side at Ardmore was Woods again with a 200-meter title at 24.82 seconds while Ahmed captured third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.26 seconds and third in the high jump at 5 feet, 4 inches.

All three Durant relay teams placed third in the event with the sprint relay tandem of Wilson, Woods, Rush and Cox clocking in at 51.31 seconds. The same unit notched a time of 1:46.54 in the 800 relay and Cox, Woods, Rush and Sager teamed for a mark of 4:12.04 in the 1600 relay.

The Lions’ 800 relay foursome of Braylen Lyday, Aiden Sager, Jaylon Saxon and Mimms narrowly missed the school record with a personal best mark of 1:30.95 for second in the meet.

Mimms again dominated on the way to first place finishes of 15.78 seconds in the 110 hurdles and 40.53 seconds in the 300 hurdles. Aiden Sager also claimed the 800-meter championship in convincing fashion with a time of 1:57.47.
