Book Talk to meet Nov. 14

Book Talk will meet November 14 to discuss an acclaimed Native American story, Mean Spirit, by Linda Hogan. The discussion group meets at 7 pm. at Donald W. Reynolds Community Center & Library, 1515 W. Main in Durant. A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, the novel follows the investigation of the death of an Osage Woman, Grace Blanket, who became the richest person in her territory after oil was found under land owned by her tribe. Others in Grace’s family are later killed, but Native American government investigator Stace Red Hawk uncovers a plot by greedy white men that involves rampant fraud, intimidation, and murder.

Leading the discussion is retired educator Phyllis Rustin, who taught English and journalism in Durant.

Rustin holds B.A. degrees from Southern Nazarene University and Southeastern Oklahoma State University (SOSU), as well as an M.Ed. degree from SOSU.

Book Talk meets monthly except in December and the summer months. Copies of Book Talk books are available for purchase at the library service desk.

The group’s next meeting will be January 9, when retired educator Jane Hicks will lead a discussion of Out of the Dust, a young-adult novel by Karen Hesse.
