Democrat governor candidate Munson visits Durant

Democrat candidate for Oklahoma governor Cyndi Munson spoke on Oct. 8 at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Center & Library in Durant as part of her “Munson Minivan Tour.”

Munson has been a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives for the 85th district since 2015.

The daughter of a Vietnam War veteran and a South Korean immigrant, she grew up in Lawton, according to her website. Munson and her younger sister were raised by their single father, who worked multiple jobs while serving in the U.S. Army. To make ends meet, her family had to move every year chasing cheaper rent. Munson moved 10 times before graduating high school, all in the same town.

She says she wants to focus on policies that will help residents take care of their families and be able to afford housing. Priorities for her include incentives for affordable housing, lowering home insurance costs, and raising the minimum wage.

Munson said she also will work to prevent attempts to cut Medicaid and other programs that help lower insurance costs and that she will work to heal the fractures between the state and the tribes caused by Gov. Kevin Stitt. She will prioritize the state’s tax dollars to help everyday Oklahomans instead of benefiting the wealthy and large corporations.

In a video posted on her social media page, Munson addressed what President Donald Trump said about her when he spoke on Oct. 1 at the Choctaw Event Center.

“The president called me a radical left Dumbocrat … They can call me whatever they want,” Munson said. “I’m focused on showing up and fighting for hardworking Oklahoma families. Getting out of 50th in the nation for quality of public education isn’t radical. Paying our teachers and our support staff isn’t radical.

“Lowering healthcare costs, protecting our rural hospitals and making life more affordable for everyday working families isn’t radical. It’s getting back to the basics. They are attacking me because I am fighting for you.”
