Everyone is invited to attend the family-friendly Durant Sustainability Coalition Earth Day Festival Saturday afternoon, April 20. There will be bees, trees and seeds; bikes and tykes; informational presentations; and free giveaways.

“It’s impossible to explain all the things that will be available to visitors to the Earth Day festival,” noted Festival co-chairs Mona Campbell and Maggie Southerland. “This truly is a community- wide event. More than 15 local organizations have participated in the planning — all focused on making Durant the cleanest, greenest, friendliest town in Oklahoma.”

People can spend a leisurely afternoon in the park while learning all sorts of things, including all you want to know about native trees or how to change a bike tire. A wide assortment of activities and games are planned for children and youths, including the opportunity to win a free bicycle and helmet.

SEE vehicles provided by Stuteville Chevrolet and individual owners; an electric bike; and local products and produce. There will be interactive music, youth competitions and activities, a chalk art competition and much, much more.

The Festival opens at noon with a special flag ceremony featuring Girl Scout Troup 2477 and local veterans and a performance of the Lord’s Prayer by the District 9 Choctaw Princesses. Durant Mayor Martin Tucker and District 9 Commissioner James Dry will be on hand to welcome and greet attendees.

Riley Coy, an urban tree specialist with the Oklahoma Forestry Department, will give a short talk on selecting native trees for residences and businesses and will be on hand all afternoon to consult about your personal tree needs.

Twenty-five organizations and vendors will be sharing information, presenting demonstrations, answering questions and sharing ideas for living more sustainably, enjoying and protecting nature, and enhancing health and well-being.

The Festival will be from noon to 4 p.m. at Carl Albert Park.
