Headstones restored at Gethsemane Cemetery

Last December, the Caddo Civic and Cemetery Club announced its intention to undertake restoration actions for older monuments that were leaning or possibly becoming unstable.

They are now pleased to announce that this initial restoration project has been successfully accomplished. Cemetery Restoration Services, an Iowa cemetery restoration company, selected the monuments most in need, within the Club’s available funding, and safely and efficiently performed the work required. In all, they were able to restore about 52 of the older monuments, including many of the tall “Woodmen of the World” stones. Part of the restoration process may also include cleaning stones that have been darkened over time by weather, dust and lichen. That work will rely on trained volunteers and resources becoming available.

The Club hopes it will be able to continue the work required to maintain the cemetery’s ageing monuments for both visual and safety purposes. They are grateful for the donations that helped make this work possible and sincerely hope their efforts continue to create community interest and financial support going forward to sustain these efforts.

For those visiting the cemetery, the monuments that were restored are marked by a small flag on the ground near the base. There are also flags placed by monuments that remain identified for restoration, but could not be accomplished at this time, due to funding limitations.

Other cemeteries or individuals who would like additional information about the restoration services provider, or Gethsemane cemetery, may contact the Club’s restoration project coordinator, Celia Reid, by call or text, at (940) 391-6502.
