‘No Kings’ rally to take place in Durant

A “No Kings” rally will take place on Saturday, October 18, 10-12:00, in front of Pizza Hut at the corner of Main Street and South 12th Avenue in Durant.

This is the second in a series of No Kings rallies throughout the country to protest President Donald Trump’s policies and actions during his second term.

Pat Notley, chair of the Bryan County Democratic Party and a rally organizer, requests that the event be peaceful and that no weapons be brought to it.

“President Trump seems to think his power is absolute,” she said. “He’s deploying federal troops in cities over the objections of mayors and governors, doing mass deportations, and defying rulings by courts, all while cutting jobs and services for many Americans to give huge tax cuts to billionaires.

“But in America we don’t ‘do kings.’ We need to make it clear to this President that he’s gone too far and we won’t stand for his cruelty, corruption, and abuses of power.”

Rally-goers are encouraged to bring signs with political messages, but Notley asks that these be “family friendly.”

Examples of appropriate messages are: “Build the Society We All Deserve,” “Stop the billionaire takeover of government,” “Fully fund schools,” “Health care and housing for all,” “Stop attacks on immigrants” (or Indigenous people, or trans people), “Invest in people, not wars,” “Protect and defend Medicaid,” or “Protect and defend Social Security.”

Bottled water and information will be available for attendees.

Notley suggests that those who plan to attend should register their attendance by typing “No Kings October 18” into a search engine, choosing FIND EVENT, and entering the 74701 zip code.

“Registering ahead of time will help us know how many people to plan for,” Notley said.
