Just after sunrise, when the sun starts to reflect on Lake Durant and the wind barely stirs the trees, a quiet presence takes shape along the banks. Above the water, four bald eagles have made this place home.
As a nature photographer, these birds have become more than a subject, they’ve become a passion. To get the perfect shot or to just watch these powerful raptors through the lens. I spend hours at Lake Durant, walking the nature trail every chance I get with my camera.
I always think of the Bible verse Isaiah 40-31 when out here walking the trail and watching the eagles. “But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.”
At Lake Durant, sightings like these aren’t rare anymore. A small but steady group of eagles has taken hold here year around. You will usually see them in the dead trees in the lake or flying over the water looking for prey. Lake Durant has become more than just a backdrop. It’s a place where nature and faith intersect, where patience meets reward, and where the sky carries reminders of something greater. Through the lens of a camera, those moments are held still long enough for others to see what’s been there all along. So if you get a chance, take a trip out to the lake and you might get lucky to see them along with other wildlife.
